Here’s an interesting podcast I listened to with Terry Gross interviewing Jane Mayer about the Koch (pronounced ‘coke’ and no relation to former New York mayor Ed Koch) brothers. Apparently they have been funding various politically motivated organisations for decades. They run the second largest privately held firm in the United States (Koch Industries) which produces, amongst many other things, Brawny paper towels. Hence the photo.  Their father (Fred Koch) made his money in crude oil refining and spent some time in the Soviet Union when Stalin was in power.  David Koch was a vice-presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party in the 1980 general election.   He co-owns Koch Industries with his brother Charles.  The company apparently has annual revenues of $98 billion and includes Georgia-Pacific and the Lycra product made by a subsidiary company called Invista.  You can read the original article in The New Yorker here.

You can isten to Gerbrand Bakker’s acceptance speech below. This summer his book ‘The Twin’ won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. He takes the opportunity to lament the disappointing points tally of the Dutch entry at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 when it was held in Dublin. The Dutch got a total of 4 points from Austria, and came 23rd out of 25, ahead of Estonia and Lithuania. Towards the end, at around 6:20, he says that instead of talking for another few minutes he will do what seems to be the right thing and plays the song, Waar is de zon? sung by Willeke Alberti.

It’s a pity I can’t find the video for this song, so the tune will have to do. And you know what else sucks? Camera phones that don’t capture the beauty of the early morning clouds…something to do with contrast and shit, hell I don’t know but the crappy digital phone camera I have just doesn’t cut the mustard… I see something beautiful in front of my eyes, I take a picture and it looks like muck. C’est la vie. Peace.

More from Sun Araw, because they’re great and the video is excellent, seriously. Its like every groovy acid mushroom tripper tent fantasy. Its psychedelic baby!

Is your recording process generally fairly improvised?

Completely. I try to really drop-in/drop-out for a good chunk of time, wade through whatever tones are hanging around in the air, usually something asserts itself, and that will become the foundation for whatever comes next. Then I usually spend a couple of weeks attempting to build that single point into a resonant field. Sometimes it happens very quickly, other times it can be more of a struggle, but for me it has to start from a point of allowing yourself to be flooded, then basking in the glow for a while. Next comes speaking the word, and then you offer the fruit in thanksgiving.

Well worth an hour or so’s meander through the enormous catalogue. If only to listen to the Sacco and Vanzetti piece.

The murder trial of Sacco and Vanzetti was one of this century’s most controversial. Sacco and Vanzetti’s story was dramatic; their front-page trial was filled with dubious procedures; and the years of appeals and their eventual execution led to protests around the world. These songs, written and recorded nearly twenty years later, have been carefully remastered from the original acetate discs and are presented with a previously unpublished letter by Guthrie to the judge in the case.

It’s the web app de jour from where I’m sitting, so it is inevitable that I have to try it out on LCEC, and inevitable that I put cuss words in animated characters mouths….
