These guys are awesomely weird. So weird that The Wire (the magazine not the tv show) asked them to do a “modern mix” of music .

Sun Araw- “Canopy”- Live at The Smell- 5/13/2010 from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.
This is a rocking performance!
Obama I want to go Surfing.
One last pop tune for the week, its The Drums with their Obama inspired throwback to the 60s – its a tremolo-laden top-toe-tapper that’ll have the kids going wild.
Here’s a live version of the same tune performed at a club in Los Angeles where the lead singer does a great Ian Curtis inspired dance. Clearly he spent his youth practicing his raving in front of a mirror.
…. and my pop lovely one more version – because of the different camera angle and the different mics used, this version sounds much more bass driven, to distortion when the bass kicks in. It almost sounds like Joy Division for the first 20 seconds excepting the cheerful whistling. There was nothing to whistle cheerfully about in Manchester.
Remember that washy 80s synth sound with breathy vocals? Well we’re not finished with it just yet, but its heartening to know that at least some people have a sense of humor about it.
And its nice to see some bands are concerned about the eating habits of women in dance music videos. This has a bit more of a late 90s french house bizness feel to it, sounds like Étienne de Crécy might have got his bandpass filter all over it.
The very eloquent Chaka Demus & Pliers – “Murder She Wrote”
Holbrook:
Not to be confused with “La Signora In Giallo” from the TV series…
FontLeRoi
A keen observation Holbrook, one should not confuse the two. Thankfully “Murder, she wrote” had that distinguishing comma to indicate who was writing the Murder.
Derval wins silver in Barcelona! The video coverage is in German and they don’t focus much on Derval until towards the end. She’s running in Lane 2, second in from the camera wearing green and green sneakers, nice…! Carolin Nytra of Germany is just behind in third place. Nevin Tanyit of Turkey (how can Turkey be denied membership of the EU if it competes in the European Champhionships and the Eurovision song contest?) gets the gold medal in the 100m women’s hurdles, European Athletics Championships, Barcelona 2010. Boy can that woman celebrate! At 2 minutes 25 seconds there is a replay of the run, and then a slower version where you can see how good Derval O’Rourke’s run was.
FontLeRoi sez:
Go wan ya good thing ya Derval!
The pervert in me says that 0:43 seconds is a highlight and those girls are looking only mighty.
Will Ferrell plays a taxman, a character whose life is written by an author (Emma Thompson). Queen Latifah is trying to help Emma shake writer’s block. Maggie Gyllenhall is a baker with an anarchic outlook. Dustin Hoffman is an English professor helping Will track down the author of his life. Will met Maggie when auditing her bakery’s accounts. Wreckless Eric wrote the song played by Will. Directed by Marc Foster. Enjoy….!
